MIS Junior Paul Nagy Reaches New Heights, Prepares for European Championships

MIS junior, Paul Nagy, trains at Central Rock Gym (formerly known as Stone Summit) at their four locations in Atlanta.

Paul Nagy, an 11th-grade student at Midtown International School, has been climbing for nearly his entire life—starting as soon as he could walk and competing by the age of 8. Now, with years of experience behind him, Paul practices regularly at the four Central Rock Gyms in Atlanta, formerly known as Stone Summit, and has become a standout competitor in both indoor and outdoor climbing.

For Paul, climbing is much more than a sport—it’s an art form. “Climbing is creative, unique, and complex,” he says, a passion that drives him to excel in both competitive and recreational settings. His love for the sport has taken him to numerous national and international competitions, where he continues to impress with his skills.

Among his many accomplishments, Paul consistently qualifies for the USA Youth National Championships, with some of his best results including a 7th place finish in speed climbing and 8th place overall, covering all three disciplines: speed, lead, and bouldering. Internationally, he recently placed 2nd in the Youth Romanian Championships in 2023. Perhaps his most impressive personal achievement is climbing outside a difficulty grade of 5.14a—a level considered extremely challenging in the climbing world.

Paul has recently taken his talents to the adult competition circuit. This past weekend, he competed in the North American Cup Series in New Jersey, where he qualified for the lead climbing semifinals, finishing in 20th place overall. He also reached the final in speed climbing, advancing to the round of 16. MIS students and faculty were able to cheer him on through live-streamed events, and links to his competition highlights can be found here:

Looking ahead, Paul will represent Romania in two prestigious upcoming events: the Youth European Cup in Ostermundigen, Switzerland, from September 21-22, and the Youth European Championships in Troyes, France, from September 25-29. He will also compete in the Romanian National Championships in Targu-Mures, Romania, on October 19-20. While some of these events will be live-streamed, links will be shared as they become available.

The MIS community is excited to continue following Paul’s incredible climbing journey and cheering him on as he competes on the world stage! Go Lynx!
